Perth, WA - 17 February 2026 - Today, AIUC Global acknowledges the University of Western Australia (UWA) for its forward-thinking decision to abandon adversarial and punitive AI detection practices in favour of assessment redesign. This reflecting a constructive shift in academic integrity policy that prioritises valid assessment outcomes and student success.

In their recent communication on generative AI and assessment design, UWA has taken a bold stance by rejecting unreliable AI detection tools and committing to rethink how learning is assessed in a world where generative AI usage is becoming standard practice. This approach recognises that punitive “gotcha” methods harm genuine student learning and miss the opportunity to embrace the potential of emerging technologies. By redesigning assessments and focusing on authentic learning outcomes, UWA is positioning itself as a leader in constructive AI integration, equipping students to use AI responsibly, transparently and effectively.

As part of this leadership, there is an opportunity for UWA to extend its impact even further. While the development of an internal transparency framework for AI referencing demonstrates initiative, aligning with an established industry standard such as the AI Usage Classifications developed by AIUC Global, just as they do with AGLC, APA etc. that is freely accessible for student use, would strengthen consistency between academia and professional practice. A shared standard provides students with a portable and recognisable language for disclosing and describing AI use, translating seamlessly across tertiary study, personal content engagement and workplace environments.

The AI Usage Classification standard also differentiates between language support that students, especially international students, may rely on for quality assurance, and substantive collaboration with AI in the development of ideas and deliverables. This clarity reduces ambiguity while protecting fairness and inclusivity.

An industry-aligned framework ensures graduates are not only AI-literate, but AI-accountable in ways increasingly expected by employers and regulators. It reinforces transparency measures emerging across sectors and helps bridge the gap between education policy and operational reality.

AIUC Global encourages universities to embed openly available, industry-aligned AI usage standards into curriculum and assessment design, establishing transparency as a core professional competency for the next generation of graduates.

UWA has taken an important and commendable step. By pairing its progressive assessment strategy with recognised industry standards, it can further strengthen its position as a national leader in responsible AI education - and ensure its graduates are fully prepared for the expectations of the modern workforce.
