In a world where it's becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between the things that have been made by a human or that may have been generated with AI, the AI Usage Classification standard aims to provide a simple and intuitive way for people to understand of AI in what they are engaging with, whether it’s children browsing the internet, board members reviewing reports, or stakeholders assessing consultant deliverables.
Through a combination of intuitive language, visual badges and hashtags, the standard presents five AI Usage Classifications™, providing a nuanced way to declare the scale of AI involvement in the creation, generation, design or development of an artifact, content or product. The five classifications include:
AI-Free™: when no AI is used in the creation, generation, design or development of the artefact or content (Hashtag #AIUCAIFree),
Human-Led™: where AI has only been used to make minor tweaks, optimisations or corrections without impacting the original intent of what was created or designed. This includes rephrasing or grammar adjustments, or lighting adjustments on photos (Hashtag #AIUCHumanLed),

Co-created™: where AI has been used to iteratively create a final artefact, product or content (Hashtag #AIUCCoCreated),
AI-Led™: where a human has made minor adjustments or corrections to the generated item (Hashtag #AIUCAILed); and
AI-Generated™: where something is entirely generated by AI (Hashtag #AIUCAIGenerated).
While the hashtags are available for general use, badges are exclusive to organisations licensed at the Registered or Certified levels. Licensed organisations receive a package containing badge formats, an AI Usage Policy addendum, an AI Usage Classification procedure, and other inclusions based on the licensing level. For full details, see the Pricing Inclusions.
To help bring the AI Usage Classifications™ standard to life, we’ve included some practical examples of how the badges and hashtags can be applied. These examples are designed to show how different organisations might declare their level of AI usage in a clear and transparent way, making it easier for stakeholders to understand and trust how AI is being applied.

When choosing the correct AI Usage Classifications™ badge or hashtag, you can follow our simple decision tree to determine and declare the appropriate level of AI usage. Registered and Certified licensees also receive a detailed procedure to guide them through the process and support their ongoing compliance.

As you can see, there is a broad range of applications for the AI Usage Classifications™ standard, helping organisations and individuals make informed decisions and acknowledge where human creativity and discernment have been applied. We hope this has shown how the AI Usage Classifications™ standard can support you in making responsible and transparent AI usage both practical and achievable. Whether you choose to use the general hashtags or licensed badges, you’ll have the tools to demonstrate your commitment to transparent AI usage. By adopting the standard, you not only build greater trust with your stakeholders and consumers but also become part of a global movement working towards more accountable and transparent AI usage.
